Visitazione di Maria a Elisabetta
Date Birth/Death
(Venezia 1519-1594)
Tintoretto, one of the most important artists of the 16th century in Veneto, painted the work for the Bolognese church of San Pietro Martire. The dramatic layout highlights the figures of Mary and Elizabeth, positioned on a rock in the foreground against the backdrop of a landscape with a low horizon whose depth is emphasised by the perspective of classical ruins. While Joseph partially emerges on the left, Zacharias is positioned in the foreground, in front of the figural elevation, as an observer of the event that seems to unfold in his vision as a prophet.
