Vergine annunziata fra i Santi Giovanni Evangelista, Francesco, Bernardino e Giorgio
Date Birth/Death
(Bologna, 1447, circa -1517)
The painting unusually combines the theme of the Holy Conversation with the depiction of the Annunciation. The Madonna, positioned in the centre of the composition on a grassy elevation, is in conversation with the Archangel Gabriel who has appeared on the right. The “flying” Child, sent by the Lord, descends towards the Virgin, recalling a rare iconography typical of Franciscan spirituality advocated by Saint Bonaventure, according to whom the incarnation of the Word coincided with Mary’s acceptance. The composition evokes the model used by Perugino in the Scarani Altarpiece.
