Sepoltura di Gesù Cristo
Date Birth/Death
(Ferrara ca. 1460-Mantova 1535)
A strange arched rock formation characterises the landscape in which the Madonna, Saints Mary Magdalene, John the Evangelist and Joseph of Arimathea are busy laying Christ’s body in the tomb. Conceived and executed for the most part by Costa, in the more uncertain details, the painting shows the hands of others in the workshop, a crucial help in those years filled with commissions, including the decoration of the oratory of Santa Cecilia, and on the threshold of the artist’s final departure for Mantova.
