Against a rocky backdrop, illuminated by a clear light, the figure of the ascetic saint adoring the crucifix is accompanied by the usual attributes, including the foreshortened cardinal’s hat, the placid lion and a skull, an allusion to the ephemeral nature of earthly things. The geological depiction of the landscape refers to the model provided for the same subject by Andrea Mantegna.
