Primavera
Date Birth/Death
(Bologna 1648-1729)
The painting is part of a cycle of four works dedicated to the Seasons, commissioned by the Prince of Carignano from Marcantonio Franceschini, one of the Bolognese painters most sought after by collectors. The fertile fields of Emilia, which the painter never wanted to stray far from, form the backdrop to the composition. In the foreground some characters, representing humanity living in intimate and idyllic contact with nature, take part in the blossoming of the spring season, weaving flowers and making wreaths.
