Gesù Cristo e il buon ladrone
Date Birth/Death
(Pieve di Cadore 1489 - 1490-Venezia 1576)
The canvas is a fragment of a larger composition that represented the entire crucifixion scene. The cuts along the edges and at the bottom only allow for the preservation of the Christ and one of the thieves. The diagonal composition, rapid brushstrokes, and strong contrasts of light and shadow are typical of the artist’s later style. It can probably be identified with the canvas commissioned from Titian for the D’Anna chapel in the Venetian church of San Salvador, but it was never delivered and remained in the painter's studio until after his death.
