The panel, signed and dated 1502 below the monochrome base, probably represents a wish for “peace” between the Franciscans and Dominicans, who have always been rivals, thanks to the intercession of Saint Petronius, seated on a throne with the model of the turreted Bologna in his hands. Petronius’ frontal pose and the gold background are typically medieval, a deliberate archaism translated into a modern image with great expressive power, almost a modern icon that demonstrates Costa’s original stylistic approach in the early 16th century.
