In all likelihood, the small panel served as a cymatium for the painting of the Annunciata displayed next to it, which shares its provenance from the same church. Although it is a finely painted work, as the rendering of the face and hair show, stylistic reasons suggest that Francia enlisted the help of collaborators for its execution.
