The figure of the dead Christ supported by angels stands out from the black background, here preferred to the more common view of a landscape: this is an innovative choice that places Francia ahead of Perugino. In fact, the Umbrian master only adopted this solution in 1495-96. The work formed the cymatium of the altarpiece originally in the Felicini chapel and, like the central panel, was the subject of a second work by Francia or his sons.
