Descrizione opera

Giorgio Vasari (1550) relates how Francia was one of the leading artists involved in painting the decoration for Palazzo Bentivoglio, destroyed by an enraged mob in 1507, in the aftermath of the conquest of the city by Pope Julius II. In this description, we read of a scene depicting the biblical story of Judith and Holophernes. This fresco is the only surviving part of that work, probably a detail of the soldiers guarding the Assyrian ruler’s camp.
