Descrizione opera
The work depicts Mary and Joseph in adoration of the Child, and behind them, a landscape populated by small figures, rendered with quick strokes. Due to the cursory drafting of some of the parts, particularly the background, it has been suggested that Costa may have been working on it before moving to the Gonzaga court in Mantova and that, once started, the panel was left unfinished. The figures, on the other hand, are characterised by a grandiose setting and a meticulous colour scheme.
