Martirio di Sant’Agnese
Date Birth/Death
(Bologna 1581-Napoli 1641)
—The martyrdom of Agnes is depicted in the foreground, above the pyre whose flames the young woman miraculously survived. The ferocity of the stabbing and male bodies lying lifeless next to her is transformedì in the brighter upper part of the painting, into the festive angelic concert that awaits the saint in heaven. The meticulous descriptive precision of the six different instruments reveals the refined musical culture of Domenichino, who also made musical instruments himself.
