Volto di Maria piangente
Date Birth/Death
(Ferrara 1450 ca.-Bologna 1496)
Mary Magdalene’s lament at the foot of the cross is all that remains of the scene that was to decorate the right wall of the destroyed Garganelli Chapel. The details such as the glistening tears, painted with an expertise reminiscent of Flemish art, enhances the perfectly shaped volume of the face. The degree of finesse in Roberti’s painting is echoed in Giorgio Vasari’s hyperbole (1550), according to which the artist took as many as twelve years to complete the work.
