Saint Catherine resting on the wheel of martyrdom and Saints John the Evangelist, John the Baptist and Bernard contemplate the celestial event of the Coronation of the Virgin. In this early work painted on the eve of his move to Rome, Guido Reni combines different languages of 16th-century Bolognese painting. The skill and mannerist elegance of his training, and his attention to the classical rules of symmetry and balance borrowed from Raphael, are filtered by the Carracci's naturalism and realism.
