Teti immerge Achille nello Stige
Date Birth/Death
(Cremona 1671-Bologna 1749)
Achilles, son of Peleus and the nymph Thetis, is being dipped in the River Styx to grant him immortality. The irregular tree trunk and foliage on the left, as well as the arrangement of the figures, has suggested that the painting originally had a rectangular format, which was made oval to create a pendant with the Arcadian Scene displayed on the opposite wall and also modified. A palette dominated by soft shades of grey, green and blue and a looser brushstroke differentiate this painting from the glazed and compact rendering of the other painting.
