The girl is captured in a lateral light that illuminates her forehead, leaving her hypnotic eyes in shadow and emphasising her bare shoulder and torso. In her arms she holds a kitten and between her thumb and forefinger, carefully clasps a rose with numerous thorns.
Il dipinto rappresenta i pericoli dell’amore: il piccolo animale e il fiore, seppure belli, morbidi e delicati, celano ambedue delle insidie, rispettivamente le unghie e le spine.
Crespi alludes to the affinity between the woman and the cat in his depiction of the triangular face, the turban with two points like small feline ears and the elongated eyes.
