Sposalizio della Vergine e i Santi Francesco, Anna e un frate francescano
Descrizione opera
The Marriage of Mary is depicted in the open air, in front of a background divided into equal parts by an elegant knotted curtain, a symbol of matrimonial union; the left part is filled with a landscape, the other with a deep enclosed portico with an altar. A keen observer of Perugino’s painting, Costa borrowed such things from the Scarani Altarpiece as the bluish colours of the landscape, the calm rhythm of the gestures and movements of the figures, while the dynamic composition recalls the Casali Altarpiece painted by Filippino Lippi for the basilica of San Domenico.
