San Paolo primo eremita nutrito dal corvo
Date Birth/Death
(Cento 1591-Bologna 1666)
The Saint Paul the Hermit was part of a series of four canvases that Guercino, according to biographer Carlo Cesare Malvasia, is said to have painted to decorate his Bolognese home
in Via Sant'Alò. A fine example of his later work, the painting bears witness to the artist's continuing interest in landscapes, to
which he gives a predominant role. The bright and contrasting tones of his early years are transformed into delicate pastel tones, evidence of the revived interest in classicism stimulated by Guido Reni's painting, which developed with Guercino's move to Bologna in 1642.
