Descrizione opera

The painting was created by Perugino for the Bolognese church of San Giovanni in Monte. The artist’s signature is visible on the wheel, the iconographic symbol of Saint Catherine. Well-balanced and perfectly symmetrical, the altarpiece is designed on a double order dividing the celestial sphere from the earthly world. At the top, the Virgin is seated on a throne of clouds, within a gilded almond surrounded by heads of cherubs and two praying angels. In the lower part, the four saints are arranged in a pyramid, allowing for a view of the beautiful landscape.
